A hospital ward can be just a section or even as big as a floor. The wards are distinguished on the kind of patients kept in the respective wards. There may be a lot of difference between two wards in hospitals that are just a few blocks away.
The different kinds of wards
There are many wards that every hospital consists of. There are separate wards for maternity patients, pediatrics, oncology, psychiatry and many more. Hospitals also have emergency wards to treat serious cases that need immediate attention. Some hospitals have wards that are for patients with problems about different body organs like a dialysis ward or renal ward.
Different hospitals can give different names to their wards. For instance a maternity area can also be called a mother and baby care unit. Large hospitals can have anything from five to twenty wards.
Why is there a need for separate wards?
Different wards are made so that is is possible for doctors and other hospital staff to treat patients suffering from similar ailments easily. This is why they are placed in the same section or floor. For instance all the patients who are receiving dialysis treatment are put in one ward while the ones who are treated for cancers are kept in one section.
The reason for having separate wards
Having all the similar patients is very effective as it reduces the running cost for all the hospitals. It can also be difficult to move the specialised equipments needed to treat certain patients if they are place in any available rooms.
