A Guide to How Botox Works

by | Aug 10, 2015 | Weight Loss

It’s not just wisdom that life’s going to hand you over with age; it’s wrinkles too. It doesn’t matter whether you smile, laugh, or frown at it all day long, you can’t avoid them. For those who like their skin soft and smooth, the good part is that surgery’s not the only way out, that a practical option such as Botox treatment is still popular. And I hope the following answers some questions for you.

What is it?

Celeb gossips, advertisements, and now even your friends may be talking about this cosmetic procedure. According to the figures at American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s website, it was the foremost treatment in US as of 2013 among both men and women.

The FDA-approved injection to smooth the frown between the eyebrows, but it’s been used to take care of other facial wrinkles too, to provide individuals a chance at younger and smoother skin for 3-6 months. So yes, the cost-effective and safe treatment taking as long as 10mins is temporary.

Unless you’re a person allergic to its ingredient, have certain medical problems, are taking medications/supplements, have a skin infection in that area, plan to have a surgery, or are outside the age range of 18-65, you’re a plausible candidate for the Botox treatment. Remember though that factors like your diet, facial structure, frequency of sun exposure, skin care, and the repetition of Botox can influence the result.

How It Works

We really do judge a book by its cover and while we can’t control evolution, we do want to control and look our presentable best all the time. Botox is the solution. However most people who opt for it are under the illusion that it’d be the same as dermal filler. It’s not. It aims to block the nerve impulses in the area it’s injected in to reduce muscle activity and contraction, and hence the likelihood of frown lines appearing.

The small needles used in this procedure hardly cause pain. This is especially true if you, like me, prefer a professional at work who would first numb it with a cold pack, if not topical anesthetic cream, and be mindful of angle of injection. They’d know better too than to provide you the quantity you think you ‘need’; less is recommended, with a follow-up if you want it later, so that you can get the drug without every looking like you had it.

You can return immediately to work or home, take a plane or lie down. Any minor redness, irritation, swelling, or bruise will fade away within a couple of hours. But if you want, use standard makeup to camouflage it as you wait for your perfect looks.
