Neck Pain Treatment and Spinal Care

by | Aug 10, 2015 | Chiropractic

Repeated and prolonged movement of the neck leads to excruciating pain, which requires medications and physiotherapy. Nonsurgical approach to neck pain treatment works wonders in the short term and you can expect improvement within 30 minutes. In the long term, however, you should opt for a complete spinal care approach to cure the pain and remove all pain-causing symptoms once and for all. Here’s a brief look into the treatment:

Curing Short-term (Acute) Pain

There are several home treatments that you can prescribe when it comes to alleviating short-term neck pain. Common treatment methods include applying a hot pack or an ice pack, taking a steam shower, getting some rest and using over-the-counter pain killers, muscle relaxants and injury sprays.

For severe pain or signs of swelling, it is best to consult your doctor for stronger medications, therapeutic measures and even X-Ray screening for possible fractures and other concussions. Manual therapies to relieve the pain include massages, neck manipulation and mobilization. In addition, stretching exercises and yoga can be sought.

If the pain persists, you should consult your physician on the use of a cervical collar. Such collars support your neck and can suppress the pain. However, the collar should not be used for more than a day or two. Prolonged usage can only damage your spine further.

Curing Long-term (Chronic) Pain

If you have a lasting pain in your neck, then it’s time to think beyond simple neck pain treatment measures. Physicians often prescribe heavy painkillers and anti-depressants to combat chronic pain. This is because chronic pain around the neck region often leads to frequent headaches, depression and mood swings. Consulting a doctor, in such cases, and getting a complete neck checkup through medical screening is the best solution.

Take care of your Spine

One of the most common myths about back pain is that it requires bed rest and completely avoiding all outdoor physical activities for some time. The truth is far from it. Spinal care is easy, does not require a lot of time, energy and money and does not leave you bed-ridden. Here are a few simple ways to take care of your back pain and improve your spine functioning:

  • Stop your normal activities for only half a day and get some rest. It keeps the spinal cord safe from swelling and inflammation

  • Apply heat or ice to the affected area. The preferred treatment is to apply ice for 48-72 hours, before moving onto ice

  • Sleep in a curled position and place a pillow between your legs. If you prefer to sleep on your back, put a pillow or a rolled towel between your knees

  • Do not pick up heavy weights within the first few weeks of pain

  • Avoid exercising when the pain begins, and refrain from it till the pain persists

The right posture and adequate sleep are more than enough for a healthy spine and back functioning. California Sports and Family Chiropractic can help you learn more on how to keep your neck and spine healthy. You can also follow them on Twitter.
