Painkillers, also called Opiates, are potentially addictive. That means that some folks take painkillers for a euphoric feeling or a high. After a while, the person will develop what is known as a Tolerance. Having a tolerance to painkillers means that the same amount of the drug no longer has the same effect. The person escalates their dose. Over time, the person will experience withdrawal symptoms from not having the painkillers. That is called a Dependency. The person becomes physically sick, if he or she doesn’t take their painkillers regularly.
Being addicted to painkillers is a lousy way to live. Not only is the person sick if they don’t take the painkillers on a regular basis; the person always needs to be aware of how many pills he or she has left, to avoid running out. The person either needs to arrange doctor’s visits to acquire more painkillers or buy them off the street. That can become quite expensive.
Many people are unaware of some of the ways that painkillers can become deadly. Last year, over 37,000 Americans died from unintentional drug overdoses. It is important therefore to know, how mixing certain drugs with painkillers can result in death.
One main way is by mixing painkillers with drugs called Benzodiazapines. Examples are: Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and Valium. Mixing painkillers with any benzodiazepine can result in stopping the person’s breathing. The same applies to mixing alcohol with painkillers. It can be a deadly combination. Mixing Benzodiazapines and/or alcohol with painkillers can be like taking two to three times the dose of the painkillers. This can be an extremely dangerous situation.
