Are you considering heading in for your first therapeutic massage? You might be questioning what to expect or if you should prepare somehow. Until you have your first massage, it’s understandable that some of this is new to you. We’re going to offer some useful tips to answer some of these questions and make the experience more comfortable.
Before the Massage
Before you head in for your massage therapy, there are a few things to consider. First is that you should be on time. In fact, we recommend you get to the spa at least 10 minutes early. This will give you time to get relaxed and ready for the massage session. Plus, if you are late, there may only be enough time for what you originally booked!
Next, it’s a good idea to avoid eating the hour before your message. Digestion takes energy and while you’re trying to relax, you don’t want to be expending extra energy. It can make the massage more uncomfortable. This isn’t a hard rule but it’s worth being aware of to get optimal results.
During the Massage
You should remove any excess jewelry or constraining articles of clothing that can get in the way. Some therapists prefer you get partially unclothed so there is better access to your muscles, but in the end, this is up to you and what you feel most comfortable with.
If you feel pain during the massage therapy, you should communicate this to your massage therapist. You should also make them aware if you bruise easily or need to adjust your body during the process.
After the Massage
After you leave the spa, make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This helps to flush toxins from your system. You may also expect to have some discomfort or soreness for a while after the massage. If you are sore after three days, you may want your next massage to use less pressure.
