A Weight Loss Surgery Patient’s Story

by | May 7, 2013 | Weight Loss

I met her in the locker room of the fitness club where we were both members. Her name was Pamela and I couldn’t help but notice that her body shape was a little on the odd side. Her swim suit hung from her top section like a 1920’s flapper dress but her thighs and hips were still a bit more abundant considering the size of her torso. I tried not to stare.

We started into a typical polite chat about the pool and the cost of the club and so forth and it came out that she had recently lost 150 pounds. Wow. I looked into her eyes at this point, and saw the joy and pride that were there. She pointed to her body without any bit of shame and said that she was losing weight so quickly that there was no point in buying a new swim suit every few weeks. She would wear one until it couldn’t possibly be worn any longer and then happily shop for one that would fit – for awhile.

“How?” I asked, thinking about my overweight husband who had tried every single weight loss plan known to man.

Weight Loss Surgery Jacksonville FL,” was her response. “I mean, I had weight loss surgery down in Jacksonville FL nine months ago and I’ve lost 150 lbs so far. I’ve lost more on the top section than on the bottom, which is not uncommon, but that’s why I’m here at the gym, swimming and toning up on the machines.”

“Wow.” I replied, ever the one to know exactly what to say. “That must have cost you. How much was it?”

“Hardly anything,” she replied. “My insurance covered just about all of it.”

“Really?” I responded. “I always thought that weight loss surgery was something you chose, like getting your nose re-shaped or all the fat sucked out of your tummy and butt.”

“Nope. Most insurance companies look at it this way: morbid obesity puts you in a higher risk category and you are likely to have more doctors’ appointments due to knee, foot, and heart problems as well as developing diabetes and other diseases. My diabetes has actually gone away already and I’m not even near my goal yet. Just losing the 150  – and I’ve got another 50 to go – and eating better lowered my sugar level, lowered my blood pressure, and made me more healthy. In the long run, they figure they will come out ahead.”

“Pam, I can’t tell you how glad I am I met you. I’m heading home now to tell my husband that he is going to have weight loss surgery. Period.”
