The True History of Space Cakes

by | Jul 21, 2017 | Drug Addiction Treatment

These days, you can buy Marijuana Edibles Online and enjoy them from the comfort of your home anywhere in North America, but it was not too long ago when the pursuit of “space cakes,’ as baked goods containing cannabis used to be called, was a real quest.  Before the terms “Medical Marijuana” and “Medical Cannabis” entered the popular lexicon, people in the know were experiencing the pleasures and benefits of cannabis brownies.

Alice B. Toklas: Mother of the Cannabis Brownie

The first recipe for cannabis brownies were published in the Alice B. Toklas Cookbook in 1954.  Toklas, the domestic partner of writer Gertrude Stein, used to make cannabis brownies for her guests in Paris, and after the publication of her cookbook, the brownies caught on with the North American counterculture.  Cannabis brownies also caught on in Amsterdam, where they became known as “space cakes” and became the highlight of many tourists’ visits to the Netherlands.  Toklas’ original cannabis brownies were the ancestor of the edibles sold today by Tamarack Dispensaries.

Medical Cannabis Edibles Are Only a Click Away

Gone are the days when you had to own a copy of the Alice B. Toklas Cookbook, and even farther gone are the days when you had to know Toklas personally, to get a taste of Marijuana Edibles.  Online dispensaries now make it such that baked goods to suit every taste and every requirement for cannabis are just a click away.  Since they are only available for medicinal purposes, their THC content is labeled as specifically as any other piece of nutrition information or drug information, such as you would find on any bottle of prescription or over the counter medicine or on a bottle of vitamin supplements.
